Treating Allergies in Pets
It can be difficult to diagnose your pet’s allergies. That’s why Cleveland Park Animal Hospital has staff with significant experience in diagnosing skin conditions and other allergy issues.
Once we have determined what is causing your pet’s allergic reaction, we can take the appropriate steps to treat the allergy. Here are some examples:
- Food: Food allergies can be addressed by switching to a prescription diet that does not contain the allergen.
- Skin: Some skin allergies respond well to medication and others can be treated by immunotherapy, which diminishes the effect of the allergen on your pet over time.
Flea Allergies
Many pets suffer from an allergy to flea bites. These bites can become infected and significantly impact the health and comfort of your pet. Even if you don’t see fleas on your pet, it only takes one bite from a flea to cause an inflammatory response. So, treatment aimed at prevention is the best medicine.
There are excellent medications available. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have and will help you select the proper preventative for your individual needs.
Environmental Allergies
Atopic dermatitis, often called allergic dermatitis, is one of the most common causes of chronic itching in dogs. It is caused by an allergic reaction to any number of commonplace and otherwise harmless substances in the environment. Most allergic dogs begin to show clinical signs between one and three years of age. Atopic dogs will scratch, lick, chew or rub areas of the body such as their paws, face, groin area, and rear end. Recurrent ear infections are common. Once your pet has been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, our staff will discuss treatment options. Bathing to remove allergens from the skin, oral medications, or allergen-specific immunotherapy are some treatment options.
Food Allergies
Food allergies occur when an animal’s immune system misidentifies a protein from a type of food as an invader rather than a food item and mounts an immune response. This response can cause itchy skin or ear and skin infections. It can also cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhea. Our doctors may recommend a dietary elimination trial to help confirm a food allergy diagnosis.
Our staff can help you decide which pet allergy treatment service in Greenville would best protect your pet regardless of their environment. Call us at (864) 806-2070 today to schedule an appointment.
